Maruti Suzuki has taken the wraps off the new Dzire. This is the third generation model of the car overall and the second generation of its compact sedan. Since its arrival in 2007, it has been selling in large numbers consistently. Now, in the next-generation model, the design has become more contemporary, sporting better features and will for the first time offer AMT across a wider number of variants.
Maruti Suzuki Dzire is certainly one of the popular compact sedans in Indian market for a long time now. The car is based on the Indo-Japanese automaker’s highly successful hatchback, the Swift. While Swift is preparing to be launched in its all-new avatar only early next year, the Swift Dzire will be the first to arrive on May 16 as it has just been previewed. With a fresh pack of sharper design language, the Swift Dzire will be aiming to appeal for both personal as well as fleet operators through its life span. As the sub-four compact sedan segment is known for practicality and less-than-favourable good looks, the 2017 Swift Dzire could re-write a new chapter with upmarket styling obtained from its hatchback cousin along with the efficient powertrain, spaciousness and practicality.

Firstly, the Swift moniker has been dropped to help bring about a bigger differentiation between the Swift hatchback and the compact sedan. This was extended to the exterior design as well, where the Dzire gets a face similar to that of the Ciaz thanks to the chrome inserts around the grille and fog lamp housing. There is a hint of sportiness in the face thanks to the shape of the headlamps and the bumpers. This time around, the side profile, despite being confined to the rules of the sub-four metre category, looks more cohesive than the outgoing model. The rear gets light hints of chrome, but with a new design for the tail lamps with LED inserts for the indicators.
The interior, too, has been thoroughly refurbished, complete with a new design for the dash, better quality plastics and soft touch materials. This car also has a flat bottom steering wheel with a wood insert, rear AC vents and a touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto/Mirror Link. Its dimensions have also increased in terms of height and width, thus affording more space inside the cabin, especially at the rear.
The all-new Dzire will share several design elements and components with the upcoming Swift besides the HEARTECT platform from Baleno that was said to be 15 percent lighter than its hatchback guise. We brought you the first ever genuine spy pics of the new Swift Dzire before treating you with the undisguised shots of the production model. Maruti Suzuki has indeed commenced production of the new generation Dzire sedan as we can exclusively revealed. The leading car maker in the country will drop the Swift badge from the subcompact sedan in pursuit of rendering it a unique identity within the product lineup. The Swift and the Dzire hold huge significance for the leading car maker in the country in terms of sales. In fact, the Swift has more customers in India than the entire global markets combined by a large amount. The Dzire took advantage of the sub-four metre category and is the first product that emerged with superlative sales numbers over the years in that particular space. Therefore, the new generation versions of both these models will be looking to carry the torch with dignity from their predecessors.
The next-gen Dzire moves to a new lightweight Heartect platform which has helped it shed close to 105kgs as compared to the outgoing model and this is expected to aid in performance and fuel efficiency. The power train options have been carried over from the current car where the petrol option is the 1.2-litre K-Series engine producing 83bhp/114Nm while the diesel is the 1.3-litre Multijet producing 75bhp/190Nm. Both engines can be had with a five-speed manual or a five-speed AMT from the VXi/VDi variant onwards.
Top Speed around 175 kmph The brand new Maruti Swift Dzire should be capable of getting to a top speed close to 175 kmph for petrol MT and 170 kmph for the petrol automatic – slightly quicker than the outgoing model. The former could be capable of doing 0-100 kmph in 11.7 seconds while the latter should get there in 13.2 seconds.
This new third generation Dzire is expected to be priced in the range of Rs 5.5 lakh to Rs 8.5 lakh
|Engine Displacement||1.2 L K-Series Petrol||1.3 L DDiS Diesel|
|Power (est.)||87 PS||78 PS|
|Torque (est.)||115 Nm||190 Nm|
|Transmission||5-speed manual/5-speed AMT||5-speed Manual/5-speed AMT|
|Mileage (est.)||20.85 km/l||26.59 km/l|
The 2017 Maruti Dzire will continue to draw power from the current set of engines. However, these engines will probably get a re-tune to offer even higher fuel mileage. Currently, the 1.2-litre petrol and 1.3-litre diesel engines offer up to 20.85 KMPL and 26.59 KMPL respectively. Both the engines come mated to a 5-speed Manual Transmission. However, while the Diesel gets a 5-speed AMT, the Petrol unit gets a 4-speed torque-converter automatic. But both the models could get the 5-speed AMT for the next generation model.
Speculations abound that the new 2017 Maruti Dzire could even get the Baleno RS’ 1.0-litre Boosterjet Turbo petrol engine. However, that might happen at a later stage. Also helping with boosting the average mileage and performance will be the new lightweight platform.
