Maruti Suzuki revealed the Ignis concept at the 2016 Indian Auto Expo. The automaker calls it ‘urban compact vehicle’, and it will be pitched primarily against the Mahindra KUV100. It will go on sale on January 13, 2017, and will be launched in an EDM concert, while official e-bookings will start from early Jan. It will be retailed from the Nexa dealerships and we expect Maruti to price it in the vicinity of Rs 5 lakh. The Maruti Suzuki Ignis is powered by the 1.2-litre K-series petrol motor (84.3PS/ 115Nm) along with the 1.3-litre DDiS190 diesel engine (75PS/ 190Nm) in the country. Speaking of the transmission options, the Ignis comes with an option of a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed automated-manual transmission (AMT) with both the engine options. In terms of safety, it comes with dual front airbags along with ABS and EBD as standard. Moreover, Maruti highlighted that the Ignis adheres to the upcoming pedestrian safety, side, rear and offset crash-test regulations in the country.

Maruti Suzuki Ignis: Exterior Design and Styling
The Indian-spec Maruti Suzuki Ignis will carry the same exterior design and styling as the model offered internationally. This means that the crossover will feature a tall and muscular stance. The crossover has a box-line design without many curves or lines, but this works to its advantage and gives it a unique identity. The outside of the car features premium design elements like chrome accessories, projector headlights and LED daytime running lights, along with blacked out A, B and C pillars for a floating roof look. On the sides are highly flared wheel arches for a muscular shoulder. The top-end variant will get alloy wheels, while other higher variants will get wheel covers.

Maruti Suzuki Ignis: Drive-Train
The international versions of the Maruti Suzuki Ignis get several engine options, including a hybrid power-train. In India, however, Maruti Suzuki will offer the Ignis with its tried and tested 1.2-litre K-Series petrol unit and the 1.3-lite DDiS diesel engine, which are also used in models like the Swift and Baleno. The petrol engine generates 84 bhp of power and 115 Nm of torque, and the diesel one makes 73.9 bhp of power and 190 Nm of torque. The diesel engine may come with the Smart Hybrid Vehicle by Suzuki (SHVS) mild hybrid system to boost mileage. Both engines will get a five-speed manual gearbox or an AMT automatic transmission option.

Maruti Suzuki Ignis: Safety Specifications
The Suzuki Ignis crossover recently underwent crash safety tests by the Global New Car Assessment Programme (NCAP), and came out with shining colours. The standard model, with ABS and four airbags, received a rating of 3 stars out of 5. The tested model also got ISOFIX child safety seat mounting points, a seat belt load limiter, front passenger airbag cut-off and a seat belt pre-tensioner. Another variant of the Ignis with an optional safety pack received a perfect 5-star rating. This model got a pedestrian safety system, lane assist, radar-assisted highway braking and emergency braking in city speeds. It is not clear how many of these features will translate to the Maruti Suzuki Ignis in India, but the tests show a lot of promise for the crossover from a safety perspective.

Maruti Suzuki Ignis: Positioning and Pricing
The Maruti Suzuki Ignis will be taking over from the older Maruti Ritz, which has been a nonperformer for the Indian automaker for quite a while now. Despite facelifts, the Ritz has been unable to cope up with competitors like the Hyundai i10 or even the in-house Maruti Suzuki Swift. Meanwhile, the automaker has been shifting its focus towards the increasingly active and more profitable Indian market for compact crossovers.
The Ignis is not a true replacement for the Maruti Suzuki Ritz. In fact, it is a completely new model that will serve the automaker’s Nexa dealerships. Set to be available only from Nexa showrooms, the Maruti Suzuki Ignis will be positioned as an entry-level model, down-cutting the Baleno to a significant extent. It is the first of three new models that Maruti Suzuki will launch at its Nexa chain in the first few months of 2017. After the Ignis, the Maruti Suzuki Baleno RS and a petrol version of the Vitara Brezza will be introduced. Given its positioning, the Ignis will likely be priced between INR 5 lakh to INR 8 lakh.

Maruti Suzuki Ignis: Rich in Features
Although an entry-level model, the Maruti Suzuki Ignis will still be from the premium Nexa family, which means that it will feature lots of upscale features. A touch-screen infotainment system will be on offer with Apple CarPlay support as well as connectivity through Bluetooth, USB and AUX. The crossover may also come with two-tone leather upholstery, reverse parking sensors and camera, automatic climate control and push button start and stop. For now, Maruti Suzuki has kept mum about the features to come, and we’ll have to wait until the launch to get a clearer picture.

So those are five of the most important things about the upcoming Maruti Suzuki Ignis. The crossover will compete with other models like the Mahindra KUV1OO and Hyundai i20 Active. The final pricing, along with all other details of the Maruti Suzuki Ignis, will come to light on 13 January 2017.
